The national association of journalism educators has elected a new set of trustees and officers, as it renews its push to retool and upskill teachers to deal with AI-enabled disinformation and multi-faceted challenges facing journalism.
Felipe Salvosa II, chair of the University of Santo Tomas Department of Journalism, was elected to a three-year term as president of the Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines (JSAP) Inc. by a 10-person board of trustees on Feb. 8, 2025.
“As JSAP matures as a professional organization, we will aim to equip journalism educators with the tools and knowledge necessary to deal with AI-enabled disinformation and the shifting dynamics of contemporary journalism,” said Salvosa.
“We will prioritize innovation in pedagogy, the use of digital tools, and the promotion of resilience among journalism faculty, ensuring they are prepared to lead the next generation of truth-seekers,” he said.
Salvosa replaces former University of the Philippines Journalism Department Chair Lucia Tangi, who will stay on as chair of the JSAP board. Tangi conceptualized and raised seed funding for JSAP, which was founded in 2019.
Dr. Hemmady Mora, former dean of the College of Communication of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), is the new JSAP vice president and treasurer.
Former PUP journalism chair Cherry Pebre was reelected as secretary, and will be assisted by lawyer Teodoro Lorenzo Fernandez, who teaches the media law course in UST and is the chair of the UST Department of Legal Management.
Ariel Sebellino, executive director of the Philippine Press Institute, will serve as assistant treasurer, while Rommel Lopez, a communication faculty member of the Holy Cross College of Davao City, was elected auditor.
Joining the newly elected officers on the JSAP board are photojournalist Jimmy Domingo (De La Salle University), Ma. Cristina Rara (UP Diliman), and the Moro academic Datu Jamal Abbas. The Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines (JSAP) Inc. is a professional organization representing university, college and high school journalism educators and student publication advisers in private and public institutions. It is the only Securities and Exchange Commission-registered association of journalism educators in the Philippines. #
